Eco Ramblings How can we avoid the holiday blues? Spend more time and energy on loved ones. Buy less, buy locally, shop green, donate. I am a retailer, but I care about the well-being of my customers! Decorate your home with natural materials gathered on walks. Support local Christmas tree farmers and, while you're there, pay a little more for biodegradable tree netting. Replace energy-hogging string lights with LEDs. (Did you know that the average incandescent light bulb lasts 800 hours, a fluorescent 10,000, and an LED 60,000?) Reclaim treasures from the attic and remake them into new decorations, wrapping or gifts. We have fabulous reusable driftwood trees in the shop to decorate year after year. Celebrate your accrual of carbon futures and good karma by diverting some of your decorating energy into organizing a people event: caroling, a Hanukah party, coat or gift collection for charity. Gifts made from recycled materials minimize our waste stream, while gifts made from natural materials are biodegradable. We carry organic cotton towels and linens. Did you know that conventionally grown cotton represents only 6% or so of the world's agriculture and 25% of the world's use of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides? Homemade gifts that keep or last, that are knit, sewn, cooked, cut or crafted from the garden, woods, or recycling are creative. Give homemade coupons for a practical service you provide (or hire), such as green house cleaning, gardening, making lunch, a movie date, a cup of tea with scones and a visit. These gifts combine love, time together and a valued service at a price you control. Or give gift certificates to local businesses for goods or services you know are needed or desired. Few people pamper themselves with massage, manicures/pedicures, and facials, and guys love them too. Older folks can't always reach their toes for example. Many healing arts aren't covered by insurance companies, but are greatly needed and valued. You are doubling your gift by supporting a local practitioner. For the hard-to-buy-for on your list, donate supplies to the local kids sports team for a favorite sport. Is there a school in the neighborhood you could donate supplies or cash to in the person's name or to their alma mater? Every type of local non-profit is in desperate need of funds: the teen center, the state parks, the natural history museum, the arts, animal shelters, you name it. Find out what the interests are of the person and go for it! Stocking stuffers at greenspace include non-alcohol hand sanitizer, natural lip balm, locally made pottery, soap, candles, hydrosols, earrings, gift certificates (add an accessory, such as a paintbrush, to go along with the gift certificate!), chocolate, organic and fair trade, of course Consider wrapping gifts in our re-usable gift cloth bags, bamboo dish towels, Sunday comics, or home-made paper. Look for recycled wrapping paper, or plain, brown paper that you can decorate with rubber stamps, crayons, paint. Wrapping can be part of the fun. RePete bags and SmartCycle or organic shopping bags double the gift and give you carbon futures, because they inspire the recipient to tuck that tiny bag into their purse or car door and actually use it at the store. Be a minimalist: It's okay to simply tie a nice gift with a beautiful bow.

| No Impact Man |
|
Wednesday, December 9th, 6:40 at the Del Mar Theatre The Santa Cruz green community will come together to spread the No Impact message with an exclusive pre-screening of the film, NO IMPACT MAN, at the historic Del Mar Theatre in downtown Santa Cruz. The pre-screening is one of many national screenings happening this week in honor of the United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Copenhagen. No Impact Man is the story of a guilty, New York liberal who decides to practice what he preaches for ONE YEAR (turns off the electricity, stops making garbage, gives up TV, taxis and take out & becomes a walking, bicycling, composting, tree hugging, polar bear saving, local food-eating citizen), all while taking his baby daughter & caffeine loving, retail-obsessed, television-addicted wife along with him. Hosted by Monterey Bay Green Business member Nubius Organics, and joined by local environmental non-profits Save Our Shores, People Power, Ecology Action and Transition Santa Cruz, the event will bring the No Impact topic home to Santa Cruz by offering community members tips on lowering environmental impact during the holidays, as well as ways to get involved at a local level. Attendees arriving at the NO IMPACT MAN movie by bicycle will enjoy complimentary Valet Bike Service provided by Santa Cruz's own People Power! Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, local eco-celebrity and founder of Ocean Revolution, will lead a community discussion about how to lessen our impact and help curb the devastation happening due to global warming. "The Santa Cruz community works hard to keep our land and waterways healthy. Through efforts such as volunteering for river and coastal clean-ups and voting for local initiatives that reduce or remove impacts before they happen, like the ban on styrofoam containers and the current petition to ban single use bags, stamps Santa Cruz as a leader in the environmental movement," says Nichols. Tickets to the event are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. The No Impact reception begins at 6:40pm, with the film at 7:15pm, and community discussion at 8:45pm. Purchase advance tickets here
