We just returned from our no-car vacation, and what a time we had! We felt a little silly walking through our West Side neighborhood with our rolling bags to the local bus stop. People were definitely staring. After taking the local bus downtown, we boarded the 17 Express, which took us directly to the San Jose Amtrak train station. There, without fanfare, not having to remove shoes or suffer other indignities, we boarded the Coast Starlight for Portland, OR. We splurged on a family sleeper car, which has windows on BOTH sides, because it spans the entire car. It was a wonderful, low-key way to spend time together as a family, enjoy the food in the dining and parlor cars, read, play cards, and stare out, rejoicing that there are still such places to see.
We arrived in Portland 17-1/2 hours later, only 1-1/2 hours late (one must be flexible for train travel). We walked to the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland. We chose the hotel because they have a fleet of bikes for the taking, provide helmets and locks for your outings have a fabulous coffee shop next to the lobby, and are a couple blocks from Powell's, the famous book store. The bikes proved invaluable and fun (once we got the hang of riding them). One of the highlights was our early morning ride along the Willamette river on the rail trail.
Portland is what I hope Santa Cruz will become in terms of bike and public transit accessibility. They have truly been visionary with their infrastructure, and it makes for a wonderful lifestyle. Another thing that struck me was the cohesive and community focused neighborhoods. There are people out and about all the time on foot, their bikes, chatting, playing, gardening. The city was clean and seemed very low on crime. We felt safe everywhere we went, and the citizens were friendly and helpful. We noticed the same struggles with empty commercial spaces, as the economic downturn has hit hard there as well, but on the other side, they will still have their sweet community lifestyle and infrastructure that will take them handily into what I think the future should be for urban centers.
Community is important to me, and I take pleasure in doing business with a number of companies, artists and entrepreneurs I truly like and respect. The stories behind many of the products we carry and the brave and altruistic souls visioning and putting green lifestyle and products forward is inspiring. That's why I was able to talk my family into hanging out with vendors on our trip (since I work too much and greenspace is ever-present in our lives, it was a happy surprise when they agreed).
One day, we took the Ace Hotel bikes and headed to Yolo Colorhouse headquarters to meet their team. They welcomed and lunched us, and took this photo afterwards: Corsers at Yolo. Our new Yolo display is on it's way, and we think you'll love the posters in the full palette! We sure do.
As we were making our way back to the hotel, we rode by Eleek, stopping for an impromptu visit. Most of you have visited our paint bar, which is comprised of their recycled aluminum tiles, and we have Eleek light fixtures over the cash-wrap desks. We were graciously given a tour by Eric, the brains behind their innovative reproduction fixtures, tiles, sinks and drawer pulls. We learned about the lost wax process, tumbling and understood the tremendous amount of labor that goes into making each piece.
We returned home by reversing our steps, enjoyed every minute, traveled well together and highly recommend car-free vacations! Today, my husband, along with about 25 others and on behalf of many in Santa Cruz, traveled to Sacramento to let them know that we really want that rail trail! |
