Eco Ramblings by Lydia Corser |
We're focused on back-to-school this month, but we know you are still finishing up summer home improvement projects and we're here for you. Paint and flooring each represent about 30% of our business, and we strive to give excellent service. Please allow us the pleasure of helping with your projects.
My daughter will be attending a new school this fall, and I was amused and thrilled when a couple of parents there asked for my help in starting down the path towards waste-free events. I guess my granola girl reputation precedes me! We are going to start with the Welcome-Back Coffee. This made me realize how many people are interested in moving in the zero-waste direction. I take my inspiration from the Santa Cruz Waldorf School community, which is making that ideal a reality. I attended their May Fair and was impressed for the following reasons:
- Everyone in the school community brings their own dishes, cutlery and cloth napkins to each event.
- There is a wash station where the dishes get washed and handed back to the owners clean, so they don't have to carry home dirty dishes. This makes people a lot happier! (I often cart around dirty containers until I can get them home to wash, so this felt very advanced.)
- The school has a stock-pile of extra plates, cutlery and napkins for guests who don't know about the no-waste goal or forgot to bring their items in the mad rush to get out the door (none of us has that happen, do we?).
It was a seamless event. There was no trash. We went around refilling plates and cups with yummy food and drinks (served out of glass and metal). It made my heart happy. Paring back to the simpler ways seems so hard, but with infrastructure and creativity (and acknowledgement that it's not going to happen perfectly the first event), self-forgiveness and dedication to the learning curve, all events could be this way. When I imagine large-scale public events where we all just bring our stuff, wash it out, and refill as needed and there aren't garbage cans everywhere filled with plastic drink bottles and every other manner of wrapper, I feel all warm and tingly!
Since every great idea is worth copying, I'm going to bring what I experienced at the Waldorf school to our new school's parent volunteer group. I'm sure we'll have some amusing anecdotes to laugh about as we go about figuring out how to pull it off, but I'm glad we're going to try! I'll keep you posted.
We have owned the store for almost 4 years now, and greenspace is going on 5 years being open. Two employees, Ben and Andrea, have been with the business the entire time. Heartfelt thanks only go so far, and I feel I have not done enough to show appreciation to the staff for their hard work. It has been 2-1/2 years, since our last staff holiday dinner at my house. This year we've been saving our pennies and Blue Ocean Whale Watch is giving us a group rate to go out with them for a whale-watching trip. I think it's a much more inspiring thing to do as a team than any meal I can make, so we are closing the store Sunday, October 2, for a nature-filled fun time. Please plan accordingly and forgive us if you forget and we are not here that day.
Meanwhile, I hope to see you in the store soon!

New@ greenspace: Tea with Iris

Now available: Tea with Iris - Nature Inspired Design & Up-cycled goods
Handmade dresses, tops, hats and accessories using vintage linens, embroidered napkins and other upcycled fabrics.
About Tea with Iris:
My goal is to create a waste-free environment by gardening, composting, and making products from upcycled materials. All of my products are sewn with my most cherished heirloom, my grandmother's 1958 Singer Slant-O-Matic sewing machine. My prints are hand-painted from the plants in our garden.
Working as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines opened my eyes to the amount of waste people produce and the detrimental effects it has on the environment. We don't see it as much in the U.S., even though we are the largest consumers, because it goes to our curb every week - out of sight, out of mind. I feel that as consumers, we can really change the impact we have on our local and global environment by the way we choose to spend our money and really think about the life cycle of each product we use. My passion for making prints from plants in our garden came from an early appreciation of nature, growing up in the Cahuilla hills of the Coachella Valley in California, and later on in life taking botany courses in college. I'm continuously learning through nature and want to pass this knowledge onto my daughter and always strive towards zero waste.
