Eco Ramblings by Lydia Corser |
I'm baaack! Jet-lagged, continent-confused, still waking up not knowing if I'm on a ship in Drake Passage, a hotel in Buenos Aires, or on an airplane over land or sea. As amazing as our trip was, my heart skipped a beat with happiness as we came to that little spot on Highway 17 two days ago where you can catch a glimpse of the Monterey Bay.
Magnus, one of the fourteen naturalists on our Lindblad/National Geographic ship to the Antarctic Peninsula, put it best after the first of many penguin colony visits: "You are in love with penguins now, but you will come away in awe of ice." He was right! Who knew that icebergs could come in so many shapes, sizes and colors? I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have had the experience of going to Antarctica, especially with a company dedicated to education and conservation. It was indescribably beautiful and moving. Look for a presentation at greenspace this February from my family, with a selection of amazing photos from the thousands we took. And don't worry, there will be plenty of penguin photos along with the ice.
We are celebrating the new year with a 5-Year Anniversary Party at greenspace this week. Here's to making it through five years during the worst economic times since the Great Depression! We are celebrating this Friday, January 6, with a 20% off in-stock sale, a drawing for a $100 gift certificate, and cake. Come celebrate with us! Cake cutting is at 5 p.m. Please come (in person) on Friday to be entered into the drawing for the gift certificate. And take advantage of the sale to fulfill your unmet holiday desires.
The first months of the new year provide a fantastic time to work on indoor house projects while dreaming over seed catalogs and thinking about which tomatoes you'll attempt to grow in the fog this summer. We have what you need to paint, stain and remodel green. Or, treat yourself to new organic cotton towels, renew your bed, add some pillows, sleep better on a new, non-toxic mattress, spoil the baby in your life with something from our baby department. We just received an entire new baby clothing shipment, so the selection is scrumptious.
As always, I am thankful for you, my dear customers and colleagues, who have become my friends. You have made it possible for greenspace to persevere. Here's to many more anniversary celebrations at your local green living center, and I'll see you Friday!

"2012: Time for Change" Movie Screening
Thursday, January 12th 7:00 p.m.
Live Oak Grange
"2012: Time for Change" presents an optimistic alternative to apocalyptic doom and gloom. Directed by Emmy Award nominee João Amorim, the film follows journalist Daniel Pinchbeck on a quest for a new paradigm that integrates the archaic wisdom of tribal cultures with the scientific method. As conscious agents of evolution, we can redesign post-industrial society on ecological principles to make a world that works for all. Rather than breakdown and barbarism, 2012 heralds the birth of a regenerative planetary culture where collaboration replaces competition, where exploration of psyche and spirit becomes the new cutting edge, replacing the sterile materialism that has pushed our world to the brink.

An Aquaponic garden system is a highly efficient, scalable solution for many of our most pressing problems. The system acts as a living laboratory allowing communities the opportunity to empower one another, using science, applied Permaculture technology, engineering, art, math, aquaculture, ecology, conservation biology, entrepreneurship, and more.
