Eco Ramblings by Lydia Corser |
It's all about the good things.
We have so many great events happening over this month and next, I hope you'll carefully peruse the calendar and read the entire newsletter. Don't miss out on the great happenings here and around town! There is treasure at the very end, with new products and an amazing flooring sale.
This month I'm thinking about sleep. Did you know you spend a third of your life in bed? And due to California's strict flame retardancy standards, beds sold here are routinely laden with chemicals. At greenspace, we are proud to carry beds by OMI, a purist in the green bed industry. Wool provides the natural flame retardancy in OMI's latex mattresses. And OMI's eco-wool comes from sheep living right here in Northern California. Talk about local! The natural rubber (latex) in OMI's mattresses is tapped sustainably from rubber trees, like maple syrup. Of course, responsibly harvested wool, latex, and organic cotton aren't cheap. But in this case, you truly get what you pay for - an environmentally and socially responsible product that is great for your comfort and health. We want as many people as possible to sleep in this kind of chemical-free environment, so we've decided to reduce our bed prices permanently. We hope that will enable more people to get a safe night's sleep!
Everywhere I turn, I hear stories of optimism and positive change. It started with Frances Moore Lappe's visit and her new book, EcoMind. After hearing her speak, I opened my eyes and heart and started seeing it everywhere. Gardens are growing in abandoned neighborhoods in Detroit. Trees are being planted by the tens of thousands in Africa. People are riding their bikes, banking seeds, working towards locally sourced everything. The stories go on and on. I know each and every one of you reading this column is part of this phenomenon. Let's keep up the good work!
